Organising a netball team

Netball needs exactly the right people in the right positions, and a court booked for a fixed slot. Here is what running a team or a regular session involves, and how Squadable handles it.

What organising netball involves

Seven positions, each with its own area

A netball team has seven players on court, and each position is only allowed in certain areas. Goal Shooter and Goal Attack are the only players who can score. Wing Attack and Centre link the play, and Wing Defence, Goal Defence and Goal Keeper protect the goal. So it isn't enough to know that seven people are coming: you need to know who can play where, and have cover for the shooting and defending positions.

Matches, training and social sessions

Club and league teams play matches in quarters against other teams and train during the week. Many players also join social or return-to-netball sessions, where the organiser books a court and splits whoever turns up into teams. Either way there are costs to cover: court hire, league entry and, in some leagues, umpires.

Positions on a netball court

In simple mode the court view groups them as GK, DEF, MID and ATT. In professional mode you drag each player onto their position on a netball court graphic. Netball has no formation picker, because the positions are fixed by the rules.

Court hire and match fees

Balanced teams for training and social play

For training and social sessions, auto team selection splits the players who are in into balanced teams using skill level, stamina and position preferences, so each side has shooters and defenders. You can still move players yourself.

Live matches and statistics

• Matches have an opponent and a score. Run a live match quarter by quarter, with a clock for each quarter.
• Record goals and Super Shots, which count as two, with the feed recorded against the player who made it.
• Record warnings, suspensions, players ordered off, substitutions and injuries.
• Club statistics include top scorers, top Super Shots, top feeds, warnings, suspensions and players ordered off.
